Mary’s eclectic backgrounds as a musician, writer, producer, graphics supervisor, promotion executive, news and documentary producer, 15-year organic gardener, and mother are all coming into play in her latest and most passionate interest of promoting the green movement.
Six years ago, on the way to becoming a Mom, she immersed herself in every detail of labels, ingredients, and companies to find safe products for her baby and home environment.
Green Goodies was born out of a desire to make others aware of the multitude of harmful chemicals they are exposing themselves to each day through products they believe are safe. By showing people that there are exceptional green products that are not only safer, but can enhance their lives she believes it will provide the motivation to change.
Mary is an environmental activist supporting organizations such as Sierra Club, Greenpeace, NRDC, EWG, Healthy Schools Campaign, Common Ground Garden Program, Natural Solutions Foundation, Healthy Child Healthy World, Environmental Defense, Defenders of Wildlife, World Neighbors, and the World Wildlife Fund. She has a Ph.D. in Educational Media, and Master of Music from Northwestern University. Green Goodies will soon be expanding to include videos promoting alternative energy, green businesses and green information.
Why Green Goodies?
Although I had been an organic gardener for 15 years, there’s nothing like being pregnant to wake you up to what is going on in the world....the list of things to avoid goes on and on...from warnings about eating fish to avoiding fumes from nail polish to the dangers of hair dye and makeup.
I began to take a hard look at what was in our home environment...what labels said and didn’t say...and what was happening to products out there.
My research led me to find out that the "natural" diapers I was buying had the same gel in them that conventional disposable diapers did.
A soaker hose we purchased for our organic garden had fine print indicating it contained lead....as do almost all hoses, keys, things made of brass, Christmas trees and lights, wiring for computers, red lipstick, and so many, many toys.
How can baby bottles be made from a plastic that leaches phthalates...especially when heated....as mom’s do over and over to warm milk for their babies?
I knew many moms weren’t aware of the dangers our children and families were being exposed to and as it became more evident that people were relying on government agencies that didn’t exist to protect them, I hoped to do something to get the word out.
It was when I read the following article that I felt empowered to know that one person can absolutely make a big difference...
China produces some 45 billion pairs of chopsticks a year — just for domestic use alone, downing the equivalent of 25 million trees....and not just any trees....
Roger Mustalish, Amazon researcher and protector writes....
“I have seen magnificent trees being cut in the Amazon to be made into disposable chopsticks for fast-food restaurants in Asia.
Did you know that when a large 150-foot-high tree like the kaypok is cut, it will often result in up to 1,000 other, smaller trees being felled as it falls? Yet these other 1,000 trees have no commercial value and are left to rot.”
Imagine the incredible effect of each person deciding to use reusable chopsticks! Imagine what can be done if we just all start to take some steps.
Green Goodies was created as a place to showcase exceptional green products that would enhance people's lives and motivate them to change to a safer, healthier and more conscious way of living.
